WHEN I WALK INTO THE house with Tom, Nainai thankfully doesn’t throw a shoe at his head. However, I do notice her looking at her glass of plum wine for a little too long, as if she were contemplating throwing the drink in his face.

Blair and Sierra come into the living room. At the sight of Tom, they shoot looks at me, their eyes asking, Um, what the hell is he doing here?

Only Yeye smiles at Tom. “Hello,” he says cheerfully.

Tom exhales. “I know why you all dislike me.”

Nainai widens her eyes. “You do?”

“You think I'm some billionaire vulture who’s here to destroy your small business, right?”

Nainai shrugs. “Your words, not mine.”

“But I’m not going to open a Red Silk location in Middown. And since my company already purchased the space next to your bakery, I’m offering it to you.”

Blair narrows her eyes at Tom. “Let me guess, are you generously offering to sell it to us for twice the market price?”

“No, I'm offering it to you for free.”

My grandparents and sisters all gape at him.

“Are you serious?” Sierra asks.

“What’s the catch?” Blair asks.

“There’s no catch. It’s absolutely free.” Then he looks down at me, the edges of his lips slowly curving up. “Well, actually, there is a slight catch.” When he pulls a small black velvet box out of his pocket, my jaw falls to the ground.

“Holy shit,” Blair says.

“I want Layne’s hand in marriage,” Tom continues, slipping a beautiful diamond ring onto my finger. “Layne, will you do the honor of —?”

I don’t bother waiting for him to finish asking his question. I exclaim, “Yes!” Then I throw my arms around him and give him a kiss.

“Aw, this is so sweet,” Sierra says, placing a hand over her heart.

Yeye discreetly wipes a tear off his cheek. “It’s an August Moon miracle.”

“You better give me some great-grandchildren soon,” Nainai says. “Yeye and I aren’t getting any younger.”

Blair holds her hands up. “Wait, am I the only one who thinks this is totally crazy? Layne, you’ve known this guy for like a day. And 24 hours ago, he was the billionaire jerk who was going to destroy our family business. Now you’re going to marry him?”

“When you know, you know,” I say dreamily.

Blair rolls her eyes. “Apparently, I'm the only sane person in this room.”

Yeye pats her shoulder. “You’re the only cynical person in this room.”

Blair shoots Grandpa a scowl, then redirects it to Tom. “You better not break my sister’s heart. If you do, I swear —”

Tom holds me tight. “I won’t break your sister’s heart. I promise to look after her and love her for the rest of my life.” Then he sweeps me off my feet and heads toward the door. “Good night. I'm taking my fiancée to our new home.”

“Uh, what?” Blair asks.

“We’ll discuss the transfer of ownership of the property in further detail tomorrow,” Tom says before going out the door.

I gaze at the ring on my finger. Its sparkle is almost blinding.
